Barley Grass Benefits?

Barley grass is one of the most nutritious foods in the world! In fact the list of barley grass benefits is a long one!

Barley grass is loaded with a plethora of nutrition including a host of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, live enzymes, antioxidants, chlorophyll and more!

Barley grass "is particularly rich in beta-carotene, calcium, iron, and vitamin C, and contains abundant chlorophyll. Other vitamins, electrolytes (eg, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium), and minerals isolated from the plant in substantial quantities include vitamins B 1 , B 2 , B 6 , B 12 , pantothenic acid, and folic acid. Also of note are enzymes, particularly the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase, and nitrogen reductase."[i]

Sounds like barley grass is loaded with about everything!

So what exactly do some of the vitamins and minerals do for your health? Below is a quick synopsis of the health benefits of some of the vitamins and minerals found in barley grass.

  • Vitamin A "helps form and maintain healthy teeth, bones, soft tissue, mucus membranes, and skin."[ii]
  • Thiamine (vitamin B1) helps convert carbs into energy. [iii]
  • Riboflavin (vitamin B2) helps body growth as well as the production of red blood cells. [iv]
  • Pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) "is essential for the metabolism of food. It is also plays a role in the production of hormones and cholesterol." [v]
  • Vitamin B6 "helps form red blood cells and maintain brain function. This vitamin also plays an important role in the proteins that are part of many chemical reactions in the body." [vi]
  • Folic acid (vitamin B9) "helps the body make healthy new cells.... For women who may get pregnant, it is really important. When a woman has enough folic acid in her body before and during pregnancy, it can prevent major birth defects of her baby's brain or spine."[vii]
  • Vitamin B12 "helps form red blood cells and maintain the central nervous system." [viii]
  • Vitamin C "is an antioxidant that promotes healthy teeth and gums. It helps the body absorb iron and maintain healthy tissue. It also promotes wound healing." [ix]
  • Vitamin K : "Some studies suggest that it is important for promoting bone health." [x]

Calcium is needed for "healthy bones and teeth, nerve conduction, muscle contraction, blood clotting, production of energy, immunity to disease."[xi]

Iron is needed in order for the body to make hemoglobin, which is found in red blood cells. Iron is also necessary for making myoglobin, which is found in muscles. Hemoglobin and myoglobin help the body carry and store oxygen.[xii]

Magnesium is required for energy production and "contributes to the structural development of bone and is required for the synthesis of DNA, RNA, and the antioxidant glutathione. Magnesium also plays a role in the active transport of calcium and potassium ions across cell membranes, a process that is important to nerve impulse conduction, muscle contraction, and normal heart rhythm." [xiii]

Phosphorous helps with "kidney function, muscle contractions, normal heartbeat, nerve signaling." Phosphorous "is also needed for the body to make protein for the growth, maintenance, and repair of cells and tissues [and] helps the body make ATP, a molecule the body uses to store energy."[xiv]

Potassium helps muscles and nerves communicate. It also helps cells intake nutrients and pump out waste. [xv]

Barley Grass Provides a Host of Amino Acids

Another benefit of barley grass is the plethora of amino acids it contains. In basic terminology, amino acids are the building blocks of the body. "In the form of proteins, amino acids comprise the second largest component (after water) of human muscles, cells and other tissues. Outside proteins, amino acids perform critical roles in processes such as neurotransmitter transport and biosynthesis." [xvi]

Without amino acids, your body would not exist. Amino acids "are structurally characterized by the fact that they contain nitrogen, whereas fats and carbohydrates do not. Therefore, only amino acids are capable of forming tissues, organs, muscles, skin and hair." [xvii]

There are 20 standard amino acids. Of these 20 amino acids, 9 of them are considered "essential" because they cannot be created by the body. The body must therefore obtain these amino acids from foods.[xviii] Barley grass can thus be a vital part of your diet by supplying some of these essential amino acids.

Other Benefits of Barley Grass is Loaded

• Barley grass is loaded with chlorophyll. The green color in barley grass is derived from chlorophyll. A seven tablet serving of one barley grass supplement, Alka Green, contains an astounding 12mg of chlorophyll. You'd have to eat a heck of a lot of spinach to get that much chlorophyll!

• Barley grass contains a smorgasbord of enzymes, which "are highly selective catalysts, greatly accelerating both the rate and specificity of metabolic reactions, from the digestion of food to the synthesis of DNA….. Enzymes are known to catalyze about 4,000 biochemical reactions." [xix] In other words, if you don't have the right enzymes, your body will not be functioning properly.

• Some of the enzymes in barley grass include superoxide dismutase (SOD) and P4D1. Both of these enzymes have been touted for their extraordinary health benefits.
